Although the day began in Zermatt with low clouds, a cool mist and a “hidden” Matterhorn, by the time we were happily settled on our jolly red Glacier Express train (complete with panoramic ceiling panels), the sky was robin’s egg blue, the sun was shining and the alpine meadows, waterfalls and mountain peaks were at their scenic best. First, coffee & tea were served at my seat followed by a tasty hot lunch with a nice selection of Swiss wines. (AN ASIDE ABOUT SWISS WINES: The Swiss don’t produce wine – you say – or if they do, I’m not sure I’ll like it. WELL, the Swiss DO produce wine, just not enough to export and they keep the good stuff for themselves and their guests!)
While you dine, the bright red train makes its way past incredibly picturesque, classic Swiss scenery. High mountain passes, narrow gorges, viaducts, and waterfalls and, of course, one Heid-perfect village after another. In fact, parts of the route are SO breathtaking, they have been listed as UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE sites! The Glacier Express operates between Zermatt and St. Moritz; stay tuned for the low down on Badrutt’s Palace Hotel and the Carlton Hotel in St. Moritz!
